Job description

The City is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Public Works Streets & Bridges team. In this vital role, you will operate one or more types of specialized, complex heavy-duty motorized equipment, along with various motorized vehicles, to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s public infrastructure. This position plays a key part in ensuring safe and efficient services across our community.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
• Requires significant experience in equipment operation or a closely related experience.
• A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
• This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy; will be subject to random testing while an incumbent in this position.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
• Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or a valid driver’s license and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class A within 180 days of employment.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

• The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
