Job description

General Description: This is a skilled position. The incumbent operates heavy equipment related to the recycling, drainage maintenance, collection and disposal of waste.

Organization: The Solid Waste Equipment Operator is part of Hanover County's Career Development Program (CD). The Equipment Operator Ladder has four (4) levels: Solid Waste Equipment Operator I, II, III and Senior. Incumbents report to a Waste Disposal/Collection Superintendent and supervise no staff. However, Solid Waste Equipment Operators may serve as crew leaders to a supplemental workforce.

Essential Functions:

  • Operates heavy equipment/vehicles, such as hook lift truck, tractor-trailer, tractor, track, or wheel loader.
  • Hauls waste and recyclables
  • Work to upgrade metals for recycling
  • Performs street sign installations
  • Operates a mechanical sweeper and other rental equipment
  • Performs drainage easement and basin maintenance and repairs.
  • Provides customer services, such as scale operation.
  • Assists with repairs and installation of compactors as needed.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • May act as lead with SWOs and/or inmate work crew
  • Uses hand tools and performs heavy labor
  • Able to deal effectively and professionally with public
  • Responds to emergencies as required
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Hazards

  • Chemicals – Possible exposure to household hazardous waste.
  • Conditions – Driving/operating heavy equipment during adverse weather conditions.

Environment

  • Field – Routine exposure to adverse weather, dust, fumes, odors, noise, vibrations, and repetition.

Physical Effort

  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds and maneuver up to 100 pounds periodically.
  • Requires walking and standing.

D. Non-exempt

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Must be able to understand and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to complete paperwork. Must be able to operate independently. Ability to communicate and to interact positively with the public, required.

Education, Experience and Training:High school diploma or equivalent required with one (1) year of operator experience preferred – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Higher levels on the Career Ladder require additional experience and training.

Special Conditions:

  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
  • Commercial Driver's License, Class B within 120 Days of Employment
  • CFC Certification within 180 Days of Employment
  • Pre-employment Physical Examination/Drug Screen/Breath Alcohol and repeated in accordance to policy thereafter.
  • Twelve-month probationary period
  • Shift Work, including weekends, holidays and nights
  • Work beyond normal work schedule
  • Must wear uniform, including safety equipment
