General Description: This is a skilled position. The incumbent operates heavy equipment related to the recycling, drainage maintenance, collection and disposal of waste.
Organization: The Solid Waste Equipment Operator is part of Hanover County's Career Development Program (CD). The Equipment Operator Ladder has four (4) levels: Solid Waste Equipment Operator I, II, III and Senior. Incumbents report to a Waste Disposal/Collection Superintendent and supervise no staff. However, Solid Waste Equipment Operators may serve as crew leaders to a supplemental workforce.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to understand and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to complete paperwork. Must be able to operate independently. Ability to communicate and to interact positively with the public, required.
Education, Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required with one (1) year of operator experience preferred – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Higher levels on the Career Ladder require additional experience and training.
