Job summary

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking part-time, temporary Maintenance Worker I or II in the Public Works General Services division to assist in street maintenance under supervision. Maintenance Worker I/II responsibilities include repairing concrete, pavement patching, road construction tasks, traffic signage maintenance, and safety compliance.

Qualifications

Job description

The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting for part‑time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) employees in the General Services division of the Public Works department to assist in all aspects of street maintenance, under supervision. This position may work up to 32 hours per week and requires a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. A full weekend schedule (Saturday and Sunday) may be required.

Salary: Maintenance Worker I: $19.78 per hour Maintenance Worker II: $23.17 per hour

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists in repairing concrete structures, such as curbs, gutters, small drainage structures, and sidewalks; sets forms, mixes, pours, and finishes cement
• Assists in pavement patching, prepares sub-base; applies oil, rock, and asphalt; and tamp or rolls surface
• Assists in road construction projects, performing such work as checking the grade, spreading and smoothing base material, spreading oil and asphalt, rolling and tamping finished surface, and building berms
• Assists with the installation, repair, removal, and maintenance of various traffic signage, pavement markings, and guardrails
• Assists in providing traffic control services
• Assists with weed abatement and trash and litter cleanup
• Performs emergency work, including clearing debris from roads and drainage structures and placing sandbags in nearly flooded areas
• May assist in overseeing and monitoring the work of court‑appointed community service workers
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• A minimum of six months of experience in a maintenance field (for example: concrete maintenance, asphalt maintenance, building maintenance, etc.) or other related experience
• Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and a safe driving record
• Basic knowledge of and the ability to perform general maintenance including repairs in the following areas: asphalt, sidewalks, street signs, and street markings
• Knowledge and application of safety practices relating to working in the public right‑of‑way
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work effectively within a team
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with members of the public in a professional and tactful manner
• Positive attitude, self‑motivated, and ability to demonstrate exceptional work ethic
• Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully, both orally and in writing
• The ability to work in a safe and productive manner and operate various small power tools and equipment

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100‑3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

All offers of employment with the City of Santa Clarita are made contingent upon receipt of proof of legal right to work in the United States and successful completion of a post‑offer pre‑employment physical, including a drug screen, and Department of Justice fingerprinting. Criminal offender information will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. The City uses the E‑Verify program to electronically confirm work authorization of newly hired employees.

In addition, part‑time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull‑Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

This is not a designated Retired Annuitant position. If you are a California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree, you may be required to reinstate into CalPERS.

Part‑time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at‑will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours per fiscal year.
