The City of Santa Clarita is seeking a Stormwater Infrastructure Technician to perform maintenance and repairs on stormwater systems and related street works. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment, repairing concrete and asphalt, and logging work data.

A high school diploma or GED is required, with two years in stormwater or related fields. Candidates should possess a valid California driver license with a clean record and aim to obtain a Class A license with tanker endorsement

Under the direction of the Environmental Services Supervisor, this position performs stormwater infrastructure system maintenance and repairs, in addition to various aspects of street maintenance work.

This position may be required to work various hours, including late nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks and work activities, including the construction, repair, and maintenance of City catch basins, storm drains, retention basins, parkway drains, road drains, channels, and related stormwater infrastructure to ensure compliance with permitting requirements; responds to hazardous spills; inspects drainage channels and removes debris; performs emergency work during storms, including clearing debris from roads and drainage structures and placing sandbags to help control flooding
• Operates trucks, trailers, and equipment, such as skip loaders, skid-steers, mini-excavators, rollers, backhoes, Vactor trucks, trailer-mounted vacuum systems, weed whips, small power tools, and other light and heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment as assigned
• Performs maintenance and repair on concrete structures, such as curbs, gutters, small drainage structures, and sidewalks; sets forms, mixes, pours, and finishes cement
• Inspects streets and drainage systems frequently to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly
• Patches asphalt pavement and assists with construction projects, including checking grades and spreading and compacting materials as needed
• Prepares reports and assessments; compiles data on completed jobs and assignments; inputs work activities into digital asset systems
• Performs other duties as assigned
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Two years of experience in stormwater, cement, asphalt, or related experience
• Experience operating heavy equipment is desirable
• Possession of a valid Class C California driver licence and a safe driving record
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class A California driver licence with a tanker endorsement within one year of appointment
• Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered
• Knowledge of and the ability to perform street maintenance and repairs in the following areas: stormwater systems, sidewalks, and asphalt
• Knowledge and application of safety practices relating to working in the public right-of-way
• Ability to understand and read rough diagrams and construction drawings
• Basic computer skills and the ability to enter service requests using a mobile device
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

This position is covered by an existing collective bargaining agreement between the City of Santa Clarita and Service Employees International Union, Local 721, AFL-CIO. If selected for this position, the employee will be bound by that agreement and may be responsible for paying applicable union dues. A copy of the Memorandum of Understanding will be provided upon hire.

Compensation includes enrollment in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System In lieu of Social Security, plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
