Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West invites applications for a Patient Care Technician in the Progressive Care Unit. This 0.6 FTE (24 hrs/wk) day shift role supports RN staff with basic nursing care and patient comfort in a high-acuity unit.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, current CENA certification or health-science program enrollment with clinicals, BLS/CPR, and prior acute/extended care experience.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma or GED.
• Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or enrollment in health science program with clinicals.
• Equivalent health-science-related experience considered (e.g., Medical Assistant, Paramedic, EMT).
• Current BLS/CPR certification required.
• Experience in acute care or extended care facility preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and provide for patient comfort.
• Make occupied/unoccupied beds; assist with turning/positioning; ambulate and transfer patients.
• Assist with hygiene activities.
• Provide ileostomy/colostomy care and dressing changes where appropriate.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Assist with nutrition by passing trays and measuring intake.
• Assist with elimination and urine output; manage drains per RN.
• Collect specimens (sputum, urine, stool) and perform glucose testing.
• Measure/record vital signs and weights using appropriate equipment.
• Operate and manage equipment safely (oxygen, suction, etc.).
• Follow infection control practices and standard precautions.
• Document care provided as directed by RN.
• Communicate effectively with RN, PT/OT, and care team; maintain confidentiality.
• Participate in additional duties to support department efficiency.
