Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West invites applicants for a Patient Care Technician in the Intensive Care Unit on day shift, 36 hours per week. Under RN supervision, the PCT delivers basic nursing care and supports the unit’s daily operations.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED and current CENA certification or enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals completed. BLS/CPR, infection control, and patient confidentiality are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must meet one of the following requirements: Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals/clinical rotation preferred, or equivalent healthcare experience.
• Basic understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality is preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider required.
• Experience in acute care or extended care facility preferred.
• Able to complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and provide patient comfort, including bed making and turning/positioning.
• Assist with hygiene activities and nutrition, including feeding and tracking intake.
• Perform catheter care, wound care and ostomy care under RN supervision.
• Assist with postmortem care and patient transfers.
• Monitor and record vital signs and weights; use equipment safely.
• Collect and label specimens for lab testing and use glucometer for blood glucose.
• Document care as directed by the RN and communicate observations to the RN.
• Maintain infection control practices and use PPE per guidelines.
• Communicate effectively using unit systems and maintain patient confidentiality.
