Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Intensive Care Unit on the night shift (36 hrs/wk, 0.9 FTE). The role provides basic nursing care under RN supervision and supports the unit with a range of clinical tasks.

Requirements include a High School diploma or GED, BLS/CPR, and either CENA certification or enrollment in a health science program, or equivalent healthcare experience. Nights and weekends required.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must meet one of: CENA certification; enrollment in health science program with nursing basics or clinical rotation; or equivalent healthcare experience.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and patient confidentiality preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider required.
• Experience in acute or extended care facility preferred.
• Able to complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation check-list.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and provide comfort; beds, turning, positioning, transfers, ROM as directed.
• Assist with hygiene activities.
• Provide urinary catheter care (in/out not required) and wound/dressings care.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Assist with nutrition: pass trays, feed, record intake.
• Assist with elimination needs; document input/output; manage drains as directed by RN.
• Collect and label sputum, urine, stool samples; perform basic urine tests and glucose checks.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight using various scales and devices.
• Set up oxygen flow meters, suction equipment; apply/remove ice packs, heat therapy, bandages, supports, stockings, and SCDs.
• Maintain infection control: aseptic technique, universal precautions, disposal of soiled linen, equipment cleaning.
• Document care as directed by RN; communicate via Vocera/paging/phone; report observations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by RN to support unit efficiency; pursue ongoing education.
