Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician to assist with activities of daily living and deliver basic nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role emphasizes patient comfort, hygiene, nutrition support, and accurate documentation.

Qualified candidates will hold a CENA certification or be enrolled in a health science program with nursing fundamentals; BLS/CPR certification is required, and prior acute/extended care experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current CENA certification, or active enrollment in health science program with nursing fundamentals/clinical rotation.
• BLS/CPR certification required.
• Experience in acute or extended care is preferred.
• Ability to complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and comfort, including bed mobility and transfers.
• Assist with hygiene activities.
• Provide basic wound/ dressing care and ostomy care as applicable.
• Assist with postmortem care as needed.
• Help with nutrition: pass trays, feed, and record intake.
• Record input and output; assist with elimination care.
• Collect and label specimens for lab testing as directed.
• Measure and record vital signs and patient weight.
• Safely use equipment (oxygen meters, suction, ice packs, restraints) as directed.
• Maintain infection control and universal precautions.
• Document care provided to the RN and communicate observations effectively.
• Support department efficiency and participate in ongoing learning.
