Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician in the Post-Surgical Unit for days. The role supports the RN in providing basic nursing care and related tasks to patients, with a 0.6 FTE status and weekend coverage as applicable.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, BLS/CPR certification, and either CENA certification or enrollment in a health science program, or equivalent health-care experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• CENA certification, nursing fundamentals coursework and/or clinical rotation in health science program, or equivalent enrollment considered.
• Equivalent health-care experience (e.g., Medical Assistant, Paramedic, Medical First Responder, EMT, Nurse Tech, Resident Aid/Assistant, or LPN) may be considered.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required.
• Experience in acute care or extended care facility preferred.
• Must complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and comfort, including bed making, turning and transfers.
• Assist with hygiene and personal care.
• Provide catheter care, dressing changes and ostomy care.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Support nutrition: pass trays, provide water, and record intake.
• Assist with elimination needs and monitor input/output.
• Collect sputum, urine, and stool specimens for testing; test urine when needed.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight (oral/tympanic temp, pulses, BP, respiratory rate).
• Use equipment safely (oxygen, suction, ice packs, anti-embolism stockings, etc.).
• Adhere to infection control and patient confidentiality; proper linen handling and equipment cleaning.
• Document care as directed by the RN.
• Communicate observations to the RN using Vocera/paging/phone; maintain confidentiality.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
