Job summary

City of New York's Department of Buildings is seeking a Plan Examiner to review building plans, ensure code compliance, and prepare objections for repairs within the DOB's jurisdiction.

The role includes meetings with owners and professionals, fieldwork for structural assessments, and potential testimony as an expert witness in legal settings. Remote work up to 2 days weekly under the program.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid NYS Professional Engineer license or registration as an Architect with four years of full-time experience in architecture, civil, or mechanical engineering related to building design or equipment systems; two years must be in building design or equipment systems design.
• Alternatively, a master’s degree or 5-year architecture degree with three years of relevant experience, two of which must be in building design or equipment systems design.

Responsibilities

• Examine and review plans for compliance with NYC Construction Codes.
• Review FISP compliance reports and related filings in DOB NOW Safety.
• Prepare objections list regarding legality of proposed building repairs.
• Request inspections via DOB NOW Build.
• Meet with owners, RDPs, and GCs to review project status and code compliance.
• Prepare reports and recommendations on LL 51 of 2025 extension requests.
• Perform fieldwork to assess structural stability and safety on site.
• Represent the Department as expert witness in legal proceedings and OATH court.
• Issue violations and Commissioner orders to owners and RDPs.
• Maintain service levels and backlog as directed by the Chief Plan Examiner.
• Support cross training, incident response, and project management in Engineering Services.
