Abacus Group seeks a Payroll Manager for its Manhattan, NY office to oversee complex US payroll cycles, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage audits. You will coordinate Workday updates, maintain cross-border tax reporting, and drive process improvements while mentoring a payroll team.

Excellent knowledge of multi-state wage reporting and expatriate taxation is required, with a Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years in a related environment.

Our client is one of the largest operating hedge funds. They seek a Payroll Manager to join their Manhattan, NY office.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day operations for bi-monthly, quarterly, and annual US payroll, tax filings, and W-2s, ensuring controls, compliance, and strong departmental relationships
• Assess the impact of employee mobility on domestic and cross-border payrolls and ensure accurate reporting
• Monitor and enforce compliance with state and federal regulations for multi-state and international employees
• Streamline payroll processes and controls, design reconciliation procedures, and develop KPIs for ongoing improvements
• Research and implement updates to federal, multi-state, and local payroll regulations in collaboration with partner departments
• Coordinate Workday updates, releases, and system improvements, including testing and post-release validation
• Manage internal and external payroll audits
• Collaborate with external vendors on company registrations, tax notices, and quarterly/annual tax reconciliations
• Respond to employee payroll inquiries, develop communications, and train and mentor team members

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree
• 8+ years of multi-state payroll in a complex business environment
• Deep understanding of wage reporting requirements, taxable income, and application of taxes, including multi-jurisdictional taxation, expatriate tax knowledge, business travelers, and employees on assignment/mobility
• Understanding of HR Processes and HR information systems
• Proven ability in researching, evaluating, and implementing regulations/regulation updates
• Ability to work effectively in a self-directed environment, taking initiative and proactively improving processes with alignment from key stakeholders
• Flexible and able to prioritize in a fast-moving, high-pressure, constantly changing environment; high sense of urgency, attention to detail, and maintaining confidentiality
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; able to develop strong working relationships with team, partner departments, stakeholders and vendors
• Proven experience in project management
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
• Experience using Workday Payroll
