Job summary

Advocate Health seeks a Financial Advocate to help patients understand and manage their financial responsibility before care. You will calculate personalized estimates based on insurance coverage, explain deductibles, coinsurance, and copays, and discuss how non-covered or out-of-network services affect out-of-pocket costs.

You will request upfront payments, set up payment arrangements, and assist uninsured patients in applying for Medicaid, charity programs, or other funding sources,

Qualifications

• Clear, proactive communication with management about customer service improvements.
• Ability to explain HIPAA/EMTALA in patient interactions.
• Knowledge of various insurance types, denials, and appeals processes.
• Basic medical coding knowledge.
• Understanding of insurance billing and denials workflows.
• Ability to document in patient accounts using scripted notes and clear writing.

Responsibilities

• Calculates and provides patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage prior to service.
• Communicates patient liability clearly and accurately while explaining deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments and how they affect costs.
• Requests upfront payment toward self-pay amounts and arranges payment plans in advance of services.
• Interviews uninsured patients to assess financial needs and coordinates with programs and paperwork for potential coverage.
• Initiates credit scoring to determine Medicaid and charity care eligibility.
• Collaborates with social workers or outside vendors to maximize funding sources.
• Educates on Financial Assistance Policy and other cost-related policies and coordinates with providers to schedule accordingly.
• Stays current on government funding regulations (Medicare/Medicaid) and HIPAA requirements.
