Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Patient Transporter to move patients by wheelchair or stretcher, assist nursing staff, and handle transport-related tasks across hospital areas. Responsibilities include ensuring patient safety, accurate identification, and proper handoffs to receiving units.

The role requires a high school diploma, English proficiency, and strong customer service skills. Preferred BLS certification within 6 months and hospital experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
• Preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 6 months of hire; Six months’ hospital experience.

Responsibilities

• Escort ambulatory patients using wheelchair, stretcher or bed and ensure patient identification before transport.
• Assist nursing staff in moving/positioning patients using lift devices.
• Deliver stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs; clean and sanitize transport equipment.
• Transport patient specimens and materials per infection control guidelines.
• Operate dispatch system and maintain transport logs and records.
• Interact with TDSS dispatch alerts and provide timely handoffs to receiving units.
• Support in emergency department triage transport during disasters and assist in decontamination as needed.
