Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Transportation staff member to assist in moving patients via wheelchair, stretcher or bed and to support nursing staff with patient transfers throughout the hospital.

Responsibilities include transporting specimens, delivering supplies, and maintaining transport equipment while adhering to infection control standards and safety protocols. The role requires good English communication and a service‑oriented mindset within a busy health system.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
• Good inter-personal skills and a customer service orientation to maintain a collaborative, patient focused effort.
• Preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Preferred: Six months’ experience in a hospital environment.

Responsibilities

• Escorts ambulatory patients, transports by wheelchair, stretcher or bed.
• Assists nursing staff with moving/positioning using lift devices.
• Delivers stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs as needed.
• Transports patient specimens to the Lab, Pathology, and Blood Bank.
• Delivers other materials such as medical records, pharmaceuticals and reports.
• Inspects E-cylinders and distributes them throughout the hospital.
• Interacts with a web-based dispatch system for job assignment and logs.
• May participate in ED triage transport during disaster situations.
