Job summary

Howard University seeks a Director of Patient Access to provide strategic and operational leadership for ambulatory and surgical scheduling, patient registration, and access services. This role drives patient flow, service excellence, and alignment with institutional goals in clinical care and education.

Leading a team of access staff, you will ensure high performance, data‑driven decisions, and cross‑functional collaboration across clinical and administrative partners.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in patient access, scheduling, or healthcare operations.
• Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of patient registration, insurance verification, and scheduling systems.
• Experience coordinating surgical scheduling and cross‑functional teams.
• Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and reporting tools.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
• CHAA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily patient access operations, including scheduling workflows and call center performance.
• Monitor KPIs for access, productivity, and service levels; drive continuous improvement.
• Ensure accuracy of patient registration, insurance verification, and data alignment.
• Coordinate complex surgical scheduling with cross‑functional coordination.
• Lead staff training, onboarding, and competency development.
• Liaise with external vendor EGS for operational alignment and issue resolution.
• Support timekeeping, attendance, productivity tracking, and performance management.
• Communicate between patient access, clinical teams, and leadership to improve flow.
