Job summary

Otsego County is seeking a Patient Service Representative to serve as the first contact for patients in the Community Services Department clinics. You will welcome patients, schedule appointments, collect payments, enter information into the EMR, and maintain strict confidentiality under HIPAA.

The role requires handling intake forms, updating demographic and billing data, and supporting the billing office with real-time insurance communications and receipts processing.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of full-time paid experience or its part-time equivalent working in a medical office, hospital, clinic, or treatment center collecting, recording, and processing insurance information and payments, scheduling appointments, and updating electronic medical records.
• Successful completion of coursework in Medical Technology or closely related field at a regionally accredited college or university, or one accredited by the NYS Board of Regents to grant degrees, may be substituted for the above experience with three (3) semester credit hours being equivalent to three (3) months of experience up to half the amount of experience required.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients professionally in person and on the phone, verifying demographic and insurance details.
• Ensure completion of intake/HIPAA forms for new patients.
• Enter patient demographics and insurance information in EMR and notify providers of arrival.
• Prepare necessary documents for patient visits.
• Protect patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.
• Communicate insurance changes with the billing office in real time.
• Answer phones, schedule visits, and manage reminders and verifications.
• Maintain accurate financial records for copays and account balances.
