Job Description

The University of Indianapolis is looking for a skilled Facilities Painter to help keep our campus looking its best. This is a hands‑on painting and finishing role with room to take real ownership of how the campus presents itself — from residence halls and academic buildings to offices and common spaces across our grounds. If you take pride in clean lines, a well‑prepped surface, and a finished space that looks sharp, this is a place where that work is seen and valued.

This is a full‑time, benefited position with a stable weekday schedule and one of the strongest benefits packages you'll find in the trades — including free tuition for you and your family.

This is an essential staff position. The facilities department maintains a shared on‑call emergency rotation across the maintenance staff, and this role takes part in that rotation. Essential staff may be asked to report to work when the university is otherwise closed or during declared inclement‑weather emergencies. We're upfront about this because it's part of taking care of the campus and the people in it — but it's a shared responsibility, not one that falls on any single person.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience —Three years of painting experience, with a solid working knowledge of general building maintenance.
  • Education —High school diploma or GED.
  • Physical —Comfortable working at heights and in tight spaces, able to safely operate lifts to reach high areas, and able to lift up to 55 pounds.
  • Safety —Willingness to complete OSHA safety training, use required PPE, and follow all Physical Plant safety standards.
  • Driving —A clean or otherwise acceptable driving record.
  • Approach —Self‑directed and resourceful, with a customer‑service mindset and a genuine eye for making a space look its best.

If you have a strong foundation in painting and finishing and take pride in your work, we're glad to help you round out the general‑maintenance side of the role. A good painter who cares about the craft is what we're really after.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Your core work is painting and finishing across a large, active campus — surface prep, priming, and finish‑coating drywall, metal door and window frames, and other surfaces as needed, along with drywall patching and wall touch‑up to make those finishes look right. Interior and exterior caulking is a regular part of the job, as is patching and hanging vinyl wall coverings. You'll measure and estimate square footage and lineal footage to order the correct paint and materials, and keep the paint shop's supplies and inventory organized and stocked.

Beyond individual work orders, you'll have a hand in the bigger picture — helping build and maintain a campus‑wide painting plan that prioritizes needs so the university always puts its best face forward. You'll respond to painting work order requests as they come in, and because you'll be moving all over campus, you'll serve as another set of eyes for the facilities team, flagging other maintenance needs so we can stay ahead of them.

No one wants to paint the same wall types day after day with nothing to break it up, and this role has natural variety built in. You will regularly lend a hand to the carpentry team on the kinds of jobs that get you out of the paint shop for a while — hanging pictures, TVs, and whiteboards, helping with office and furniture moves, and assisting with storefront and glass work. It is a welcome change of pace that keeps the days varied while the carpenters get an extra set of capable hands.

Like everyone in facilities, you'll also pitch in on general maintenance and cross‑departmental work when the situation calls for it — event setups, snow removal, and emergency response are shared efforts across the team.

General Employee Expectations
  • Follow the guidance and direction of supervisor(s).
  • Demonstrate respectful, ethical, responsible behavior.
  • Abide by the University’s policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Perform employee responsibilities as detailed in employee handbooks and policies.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Other duties, including special projects, as required or assigned.
