Job Description

The University of Indianapolis is looking for a skilled FacilitiesPainter to help keep our campus looking its best. This is ahands-on painting and finishing role with room to take realownership of how the campus presents itself — from residence hallsand academic buildings to offices and common spaces across ourgrounds. If you take pride in clean lines, a well-prepped surface, and a finished space that looks sharp, this is a place where thatwork is seen and valued.

This is a full-time, benefited position with a stable weekdayschedule and one of the strongest benefits packages you'll find inthe trades — including free tuition for you and your family.

This is an essential staff position. The facilities departmentmaintains a shared on-call emergency rotation across themaintenance staff, and this role takes part in that rotation.Essential staff may be asked to report to work when the universityis otherwise closed or during declared inclement-weatheremergencies. We're upfront about this because it's part of takingcare of the campus and the people in it — but it's a sharedresponsibility, not one that falls on any single person.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience — Three years of painting experience, with asolid working knowledge of general building maintenance.
  • Education — High school diploma or GED.
  • Physical — Comfortable working at heights and in tightspaces, able to safely operate lifts to reach high areas, and ableto lift up to 55 pounds.
  • Safety — Willingness to complete OSHA safety training, use required PPE, and follow all Physical Plant safetystandards.
  • Driving — A clean or otherwise acceptable drivingrecord.
  • Approach — Self-directed and resourceful, with acustomer-service mindset and a genuine eye for making a space lookits best.

If you have a strong foundation in painting and finishing and takepride in your work, we're glad to help you round out thegeneral-maintenance side of the role. A good painter who caresabout the craft is what we're really after.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Your core work is painting and finishing across a large, activecampus — surface prep, priming, and finish-coating drywall, metaldoor and window frames, and other surfaces as needed, along withdrywall patching and wall touch-up to make those finishes lookright. Interior and exterior caulking is a regular part of the job,as is patching and hanging vinyl wall coverings. You'll measure andestimate square footage and lineal footage to order the correctpaint and materials, and keep the paint shop's supplies andinventory organized and stocked.

Beyond individual work orders, you'll have a hand in the biggerpicture — helping build and maintain a campus-wide painting planthat prioritizes needs so the university always puts its best faceforward. You'll respond to painting work order requests as theycome in, and because you'll be moving all over campus, you'll serveas another set of eyes for the facilities team, flagging othermaintenance needs so we can stay ahead of them.

No one wants to paint the same wall types day after day withnothing to break it up, and this role has natural variety built in.You will regularly lend a hand to the carpentry team on the kindsof jobs that get you out of the paint shop for a while — hangingpictures, TVs, and whiteboards, helping with office and furnituremoves, and assisting with storefront and glass work. It is a welcome change of pace that keeps the days varied while thecarpenters get an extra set of capable hands.

Like everyone in facilities, you'll also pitch in on generalmaintenance and cross-departmental work when the situation callsfor it — event setups, snow removal, and emergency response areshared efforts across the team.

General Employee Expectations
  • Follow the guidance and direction of supervisor(s).
  • Demonstrate respectful, ethical, responsible behavior.
  • Abide by the University’s policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Perform employee responsibilities as detailed in employee handbooks and policies.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Other duties, including special projects, as required or assigned.
