Job summary

UNC Health is offering a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship Program in Raleigh, NC for rising senior ADN and BSN students. The extern will work under RN supervision in a hospital setting, gaining hands-on clinical experience and preparing for licensure as a registered nurse.

Participants will join a team in a neuroscience-focused unit, with opportunities for education and certification support, and a pathway toward professional nursing in a large health system.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Must be able to perform lifting and physical tasks described in job duties.
• BLS certification may be required; nursing student externship expectations.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report significant changes to a nurse.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide care/treatments per care plan including vital signs, wound care, and basic nursing tasks.
• Perform daily living activities support and assist with mobility as needed.
• Support clean, restock, and clerical tasks in the unit and staff areas.
• Reinforce patient teaching and assist with routine examinations when applicable.
• Assist in emergency situations with equipment and supplies as directed.
• Support staff in psychiatric settings with safety and therapeutic activities.
