Job summary

The UNC Health 6 West Orthopedic unit at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC offers a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship for rising senior ADN and BSN students. The program provides hands-on clinical experience and aims to sharpen nursing skills as you transition from student to professional nurse.

You will work on a 30-bed orthopedic unit with an RN partner, gaining exposure to post-surgical care and an interdisciplinary team within a recognized program.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; higher degree may satisfy.
• Enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with 12 months to graduation.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS.
• BLS certification required.
• Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; report changes to RN.
• Assist with admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care per plan of care: vital signs, wound care, ROM, etc.
• Assist with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Indirect care: cleaning, stocking, transporting, and clerical tasks.
• Reinforce routine teaching and document patient understanding.
• Assist providers with routine exams and equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aid in orientation and behavior plans; CPR as needed.
