Job summary

UNC Health is launching a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship Program designed for rising senior ADN and BSN students to gain hands-on clinical experience in hospital-based care.

The externship emphasizes teamwork, professional development, and patient care in a 24-bed Med Surg unit with opportunities to advance clinically. The program runs May 24 to July 31 onsite at UNC Rex Holly Springs Hospital, with supervision by RNs and a Patient Services Manager.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize patient care assignments.
• Basic computer skills for charting and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Observe, document patient information and report significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide routine direct and indirect patient care as outlined in care plans and protocols.
• Assist with activities of daily living and transport of patients and supplies.
• Support learning by reinforcing nurse teaching and documenting understanding.
• Assist in examinations and procedures and procure necessary equipment during emergencies.
• Support psychiatric patients with age-appropriate activities and maintain safe, therapeutic milieu.
