UNC Health is offering a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship Program for rising senior ADN and BSN nursing students in the 6 West Orthopedic unit at UNC Rex Hospital. The externship provides hands-on clinical experience, strengthens nursing skills, and helps you explore hospital-based care in a fast-paced setting.

Under RN supervision, externs develop critical skills in patient care, safety, and teamwork, preparing for a smooth transition from student to licensed nurse.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy.
• Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start of externship.
• Nursing Assistant I certification with NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in English (verbal and written).
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs; frequent standing/walking; CPR proficiency.

Responsabilités

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge; supports family education.
• Performs plan-of-care activities: vital signs, wound care, ROM, simple wound care, and basic patient handling.
• Provides direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Maintains clean and stocked work area; transports patients, supplies, and specimens; supports orientation of new staff/students.
• Reinforces patient teaching and assists with procedures; collaborates with the care team to ensure safe care.
