Job summary

UNC Health is offering a 10-week, paid summer Student Nurse Externship Program for rising senior ADN and BSN students in Raleigh, NC. The extern will partner with an RN to gain hands-on clinical experience and strengthen nursing skills in a hospital setting.

The role provides exposure to pulmonary/nephrology ICU care on 4 East (UNC Rex) with opportunities to learn critical thinking, patient care, and teamwork while preparing for licensure as a registered nurse.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Currently enrolled in a prelicensure nursing program with expected graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification listed with NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent English, strong communication and organization skills.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information; report significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care/treatments per plan of care: vital signs, wound care, specimen collection, and other tasks.
• Deliver direct personal care for daily living activities and support ambulation.
• Maintain clean work area, restock supplies, and assist in orientation of new staff and students.
• Reinforce patient education and document understanding.
• Assist providers during examinations and procedures; procure equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aid in reality orientation and de-escalation, monitor milieu activities.
