UNC Health Rex 6 East Short Stay Unit in Raleigh offers a 10-week paid Student Nurse Externship for rising senior ADN/BSN students to gain hands-on clinical experience and strengthen nursing skills. This summer program emphasizes transitioning students from learner to professional nurse through direct patient care, supervision, and teamwork.

The SNE I role works with an RN partner within a Nursing Assistant I scope and supports learning in various medical and surgical settings, under

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
• Frequent standing/walking.
• CPR certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Observes and documents patient information and reports changes.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides care per plan including vital signs, wound care, and glucose checks.
• Performs direct personal care for daily living activities.
• Performs indirect care such as cleaning, restocking, and transporting.
• Reinforces patient teaching with the RN and confirms understanding.
• Assists during routine exams and procedures; procures equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, supports orientation, de-escalation, and safety.
