Job summary

NES Fircroft partners with a growing engineering and field services organization to add experienced Protection & Control Technicians across the U.S. The role focuses on relay testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and protection-system work in transmission and distribution substations.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with protective relays and schemes, and familiar with SCADA/RTU interfaces, relay test equipment (e.g., Doble F6150, Omicron CMC), and field commissioning in utility

Qualifications

• 3+ years of Protection & Control, relay testing, or substation commissioning experience.
• Hands-on experience testing and commissioning protective relays and protection schemes.
• Experience with relay test equipment such as Doble F6150, Omicron CMC, or similar secondary injection test sets.
• Strong understanding of relay settings, protection logic, control circuits, and electrical protection systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot protective relays, wiring, communications, and control circuits.
• Experience working within utility transmission or distribution substations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently in the field.

Responsibilities

• Perform Protection & Control testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup activities within utility and industrial substations.
• Test and commission protective relays from manufacturers including SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Beckwith, Basler, and similar platforms.
• Perform secondary injection testing, functional testing, element testing, logic verification, trip checks, and end-to-end testing of protection schemes.
• Test and verify protection functions including overcurrent, differential, distance, bus, transformer, breaker failure, and other transmission/distribution protection schemes.
• Troubleshoot relay logic, control wiring, DC circuits, communications, and protection system issues.
• Read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, elementary diagrams, and protection drawings.
• Perform point-to-point checks, control circuit verification, and trip/close circuit testing during commissioning activities.
• Support SCADA, RTU, and substation communications checkout where required.
