Job summary

Community Action of Skagit County in WA is seeking a Cold Weather Shelter Specialist to provide a safe, warm environment for individuals experiencing homelessness when temperatures drop. The role involves direct guest interaction, safety oversight, and enforcing shelter policies.

The position is roughly 36 hours per week with shifts determined by weather. Responsibilities include intake, referrals, crisis response, hygiene and record keeping, and collaboration with local agencies.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED/HSE; Associate degree preferred.
• Experience in social services, homeless outreach, or shelter work preferred.

Responsibilities

• Welcome guests and assist with intake procedures and referrals.
• Monitor shelter safety; enforce rules for guests and staff; conduct regular checks.
• Address conflicts or emergencies calmly following established protocols.
• Ensure shelter is clean, organized, and disinfected after morning closure.
• Maintain accurate documentation of guests, incidents, and supplies.
• Collaborate with local agencies to provide resources and referrals.
• Participate in training on shelter policies, emergency procedures, and best practices.
