Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking an Outpatient Coder to assign accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes to outpatient, ER, therapy, and clinic encounters based on documentation in the EMR. The role ensures compliance with coding guidelines and hospital policy.

The position requires knowledge of coding classification systems, medical terminology, and proficiency with coding software and EHR systems, plus strong communication skills. Non-exempt status, on-site in Houston.

Qualifications

• One year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program.
• Associate degree or higher in an AHIMA accredited program, or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS, CPT coding guidelines, and coding compliance.

Responsibilities

• Assign accurate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for outpatient encounters.
• Query physicians for diagnoses/procedures when needed via physician query process.
• Maintain coding accuracy and compliance with AHIMA guidelines and hospital policy.
• Monitor coding quality and productivity in the department.
