Job summary

AEG Vision in Chesapeake, VA seeks an Optometric Technician to work with the optometrists, supporting patient care and education, ensuring a high‑quality experience from start to finish.

You will perform preliminary evaluations, assist with diagnostic testing, manage schedules, maintain patient records in EHR per HIPAA, and help with clerical tasks. The role emphasizes accuracy, teamwork, and compassionate service.

Qualifications

• Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications.
• Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment.
• Experience maintaining patients' records / files per HIPAA regulations.
• Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT).

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto refractor, visual acuity.
• Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit.
• May be required to schedule referral appointments and complete paperwork.
• Records and maintain patient records / files in compliance with HIPAA.
• Responds to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, problems referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
• May be required to perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera).
• Documents medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in EHR and assist with clerical duties related to medical documentation.
• Ensures maximum schedule utilization through pre-appointment confirmation and recall outreach.
• Performs contact lens insertion/removal classes and manages inventory and orders.
• End-of-day responsibilities including wrap-up and cleanliness.
• May act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions.
• Performs other duties within the practice as requested.
