The People Concern in Los Angeles is seeking a Support Specialist for the Village shelter. You will be the first point of contact for clients, help maintain the facility, and support resident progress in a trauma-informed, respectful environment.

This role requires strong customer service, teamwork, and crisis response. Documentation in HMIS is part of daily duties, with focus on safety and cleanliness across dorms and common spaces.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Minimum one year experience in related work.
• Effective customer service and the ability to handle difficult situations.
• Ability to work independently and think critically.
• Professional demeanor under all circumstances.
• Commitment to improving the community through empowerment.
• Familiarity with non-violent crisis intervention.
• Familiarity with issues faced by population served.
• Self-motivation and ability to organize others.
• Computer literacy and HMIS/documentation experience.
• Team player mindset.
• Food Handlers, CPR and First Aid certification obtainable.
• Initiative toward ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

• Act as the first point-of-contact for immediate client needs and requests.
• Monitor the floor and ensure safety, cleanliness, and guideline adherence.
• Be visible on the floor and actively engage clients.
• Conduct regular, thorough facility walk-throughs.
• Create a supportive, trauma-informed environment to aid stability.
• Attend staff meetings, trainings, and retreats as scheduled.
• Oversee cubicle/bed area maintenance in a trauma-informed manner.
• Facilitate client engagement activities and groups.
• Complete incident reports and update shift logs; document in HMIS.
• Develop trusting client relationships using motivational interviewing and harm reduction.
• Intervene during crises to de-escalate with safety in mind.
• Work with a team to provide integrated care for individuals experiencing homelessness.
• Communicate effectively with management, peers, and clients.
• Maintain client confidentiality per laws and agency policies.
• Other duties as assigned.
