Job summary

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public.
• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents.
• Knowledge of construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Communication: Interact with VDOT support staff and external team; notify public about traffic changes and project phases.
• Construction and Contract Compliance: Ensure activities meet contract, plans, environmental and safety standards; manage non-compliance issues.
• Project Documentation: Maintain diaries, photos, and files; track materials and contractor schedule; prepare reports.
• Project Oversight: Monitor QC tasks, schedule, and site conditions; may serve as Project Inspector on simpler contracts.
• Project Safety and Environmental Compliance: Ensure proper traffic control, safety practices, and erosion/sediment control.
• Maintain dedicated work areas; ensure equipment and personnel comply with safety directives.
