Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) seeks an experienced inspector to independently coordinate, schedule, and inspect all phases of highway construction projects. The role ensures quality construction in accordance with plans, specifications, and environmental and safety regulations.

You will monitor contractor performance, manage submittals, maintain project diaries, and support project close-outs.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively with VDOT staff, contractors and the public.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans and contracts.
• Ability to document and maintain detailed project records, reports and diaries.
• Knowledge of safety, environmental, and EEO/DBE guidelines related to transportation construction.
• Ability to oversee project submittals and ensure contractor compliance.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate routine and complex highway project inspections to assure quality per plans.
• Monitor schedules, budget, quantities and costs; track progress and variances.
• Prepare detailed project diaries, daily occurrences, and correspondence.
• Review submittals and provide guidance to contractors and inspectors.
• Assist in project close-outs and maintain as-built drawings.
• Ensure safety, environmental controls, and traffic management requirements are met.
