Job summary

VDOT Suffolk-based inspector role inspecting highways to ensure quality per plans and specifications. You will coordinate with staff, communicate public concerns, and track documentation and testing to support contract compliance and project schedules.

The position requires math proficiency, ability to read complex road/bridge drawings, and valid driver’s license. State agency benefits and field work are offered.

Qualifications

• Communication skills, oral and written, with staff and the public.
• Ability to read, interpret roadway, structure and bridge plans and specs.
• Mathematics knowledge including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.
• Ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months.
• Safety shoes required and proficiency with computers/software.
• Experience with engineering/testing equipment and inspection methods.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Inspect all phases of highway construction to ensure quality per plans and specs.
• Communicate with VDOT staff and public; manage public concerns and traffic changes.
• Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and DBE/EEO guidelines; supervise testing.
• Maintain project files, daily diaries, photos, and as-built drawings.
• Assist in contract compliance, schedule, and oversite of project activities.
• Support safety and environmental compliance in work zones.
