Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a Project Inspector to oversee highway construction and maintenance, ensuring work meets plans, specifications and safety standards. You will document daily activities, coordinate with contractors and public agencies, and support quality control across phases of the project.

You will need strong math skills, the ability to read road and bridge plans, and the discipline to maintain thorough records and timely reports while working in the field.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with project teams and the public.
• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans.
• Knowledge of construction inspection and materials testing.
• Safety shoes required and valid driver’s license.
• Experience with environmental, erosion controls and permits is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Inspect all phases of highway construction to ensure quality.
• Maintain project diaries, photos and as-built drawings.
• Coordinate with contractors, inspector, and traffic management teams.
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and EEO/DBE guidelines.
