Job summary

Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Observability team. You will improve system reliability and MTTR for Business Insurance applications, focusing on Dynatrace SaaS and OpenTelemetry.

You will decompose processes into observability requirements, define dashboards and alerts, and mentor peers while contributing to automation and IaC workflows. Ideal candidates have four years of development experience, strong Dynatrace and OpenTelemetry expertise, and hands-on cloud/infra

Qualifications

• Four years of programming/development experience.
• Deep, hands-on expertise with Dynatrace SaaS, including Gen3 apps, DQL, workflows, and alert configurations.
• Hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry, including instrumentation and semantic conventions.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform; observability platforms preferred.
• Experience with incident response, including triage, root cause analysis, and post-mortems.
• Experience advising other engineering teams on observability adoption.
• Experience using AI-assisted coding tools as part of development work.
• Experience with containerized platforms (Kubernetes, Docker).
• Cloud engineering experience, AWS preferred.
• Proficiency with source control (Git/GitHub) and CI/CD tooling.
• Ability to write code for automation and tooling purposes, Python and/or JavaScript/Node.js preferred.
• Familiarity with Linux systems and shell scripting.
• Delivery skills: estimate timelines, steady pace, release in small batches.
• Domain expertise and ability to understand industry trends and business priorities.
• Strong problem solver capable of long-term solution design.
• Strong communicator capable of concise business-focused communication.

Responsibilities

• Partner with application teams to improve observability posture and reliability across systems and services.
• Perform design, development, and configuration tasks with accuracy and speed as an individual contributor.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code for Dynatrace configurations and monitoring workflows.
• Analyze, triage, and resolve defects and incidents of advanced complexity.
• Translate business processes into observability requirements with dashboards and alerts tied to business impact.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
• Work independently to tackle scoped problems and seek opportunities to expand knowledge.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
