Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Nurse Extern to support the Registered Nurse in delivering safe, high-quality patient care on a clinical unit. You will assist with ADLs, mobility, vital signs, nutrition, and documentation under RN supervision.

Applicants must be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have completed foundational coursework. Orientation and competency validation will occur during onboarding.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program with good academic standing (GPA 2.5).
• Completion of foundational nursing coursework required prior to onboarding.
• No additional certifications beyond enrollment are required.

Responsibilities

• Supports patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and assists with bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, and other care.
• Assists patients with mobility and hygiene needs under RN direction.
• Obtains and documents routine clinical measurements and reports abnormalities to the RN.
• Supports patient nutrition and hydration per diet orders and RN guidance.
• Maintains a clean and safe patient environment with infection prevention standards.
• Observes changes in patient condition and reports promptly to the RN.
• Reinforces patient and family education and orientation.
• Performs clerical tasks and EMR data entry and supports unit communications.
• Manages patient-care supplies and equipment; ensures inventory and cleanliness.
• Performs competency-validated technical tasks (e.g., ECGs, venipuncture, specimen collection) under RN supervision.
