Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Nurse Extern to assist with patient care under RN supervision in a hospital environment. You will help with ADLs, mobility, vitals, and nutrition while maintaining patient safety and dignity.

Your role includes documenting measurements, supporting care coordination, and participating in competency-validated clinical tasks as directed by the RN. Orientation and onboarding align with program requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program with good standing and a 2.5 GPA.
• Foundational nursing coursework completed or in progress as defined by the program.
• Documentation of coursework and competency suitable for supervised clinical practice.

Responsibilities

• Assists with activities of daily living while maintaining dignity, comfort, and safety.
• Assists with mobility, transfers, and use of assistive devices as directed by the RN.
• Records routine vital signs and intake/output; reports changes to the RN.
• Supports nutrition and hydration, meal setup, and diet tolerance under RN guidance.
• Keeps patient areas clean and safe; adheres to infection prevention standards.
• Observes changes in patient condition and reports them to the RN.
• Assists in patient education and orientation as directed by RN.
• Performs clerical tasks and supports unit communication and supply retrieval.
• Manages supplies and equipment and ensures proper functioning.
• Performs competency-validated skills under RN supervision (e.g., ECG, venipuncture).

Education

High school diploma or GED

Enrolled in accredited nursing program

Maintain GPA 2.5 on 4.0 scale

Completion of foundational nursing coursework
