Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Nurse Extern to support patient care under RN supervision. You will assist with activities of daily living, mobility, vitals, nutrition, and patient education, while ensuring safety and dignity for patients across units.

Successful candidates are enrolled in an accredited nursing program and maintain a 2.5 GPA, with completion of foundational coursework, to gain supervised clinical experience and competency validation as part of onboarding.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program with good standing and GPA 2.5.
• Completion of foundational nursing coursework as defined by program.
• Ability to participate safely in supervised clinical practice.

Responsibilities

• Supports ADLs: bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing with dignity and safety.
• Assists mobility: repositioning, transfers, ambulation with RN direction.
• Records routine vitals and intake/output; reports abnormalities to RN.
• Supports nutrition: feeding, meal setup, monitors diet tolerance per orders.
• Maintains clean, safe environment meeting infection prevention standards.
• Observes changes in patient condition and reports promptly to RN.
• Explains unit routines and assists preparing patients for tests/procedures.
• Performs clerical tasks and supports communication on the unit.
• Manages supplies and equipment; ensures cleanliness and readiness.
• Performs competency-based skills under RN supervision (e.g., 12-lead ECG, venipuncture, specimen collection).
