Job summary

Disabled American Veterans seeks an NSO Apprentice to begin on-the-job training toward National Service Officer designation. You will represent veterans and their families in disability claims before VA and other agencies.

Expected duties include interviewing veterans, reviewing records, advising on evidence needs, and preparing submissions to advance claims, with supervision and phased training. Travel may be required for training and relocation may be necessary nationwide.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must be eligible for VA Voc Rehab and Employment services under the DAV program.
• DAV membership in good standing required.
• Basic knowledge of legal/medical terminology helpful.
• Familiarity with business processes and client records is a plus.
• Valid driver's license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Acquire and maintain knowledge of veterans benefits laws and regulations.
• Learn to conduct detailed interviews with veterans to identify benefits.
• Review service and medical records to assess claim validity.
• Determine evidentiary needs and advise veterans on filing strategy.
• Prepare submissions to initiate and advance claims, including briefs.
• Monitor claim progress and communicate with VA adjudicators.
• Advise on potential appeal options when claims are denied.
• Represent claimants before hearing panels and boards as needed.
• Develop workload plans and prioritize tasks for clients.
• Recruit new DAV members to support DAV's mission.
