Job summary

Emerus is seeking a Patient Access Specialist for a night shift at our 16-bed small-format hospital. The role acts as a liaison between patient/family, payers and the Patient Financial Services team to verify demographics, collect out-of-pocket amounts and maximize hospital reimbursement.

Responsibilities include EMTALA and HIPAA compliance, excellent customer service, collecting signatures, eligibility verification, and coordinating transfers when needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 2 years of patient registration and insurance verification experience preferred.
• Emergency Department registration experience strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of various insurance plans (HMO, PPO, POS, Medicare, Medicaid) and payors.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology.
• Excellent customer service.
• Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Position requires fluency in English; bilingual in English & Spanish preferred in certain markets.

Responsibilities

• Maintain EMTALA, DNV, HIPAA compliance and all hospital/government regulations in Admissions and Medical Records handling.
• Provide excellent customer service and build relationships with customers.
• Identify and triage patients upon arrival to the hospital to protect patient safety.
• Answer phones professionally and relay messages to medical staff.
• Obtain signatures on required forms and consents.
• Enter complete demographic information to facilitate revenue cycle processing.
• Verify insurance benefits and correct payor/plans in the patient accounting system.
• Obtain insurance authorizations as required by plans.
• Maximize collections by timely follow-up at the point of service.
• Scan registration and clinical documentation into the system and maintain medical records.
• Coordinate transfers to other hospitals when needed.
• Respond to medical record requests from patients, physicians, and hospitals.
• Maintain cash drawer per policy.
• Maintain logs of patients, payments, transfers, and admissions.
• Maintain visitor/vendor logs.
