Job summary

Mercy Health–Youngstown in Ohio is seeking a Nurse Manager to supervise clinical and administrative functions during the night shift. You will provide leadership to nursing staff, collaborate with physicians and other departments, and drive quality patient care through innovation.

The role requires an accredited nursing degree, Virginia license, and 3–5 years of supervisory clinical experience. CPR, ACLS and PALS certifications are required or can be obtained during orientation.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; a BSN is preferred.
  • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the State of Virginia.
  • Have 3-5 years of recent clinical experience, including supervisory experience.
  • CPR certified and able to perform adult and child CPR in any setting throughout the hospital.
  • ACLS and PALS certifications (can be obtained during orientation).

Responsibilities

  • Perform hospital rounds to assess and evaluate the quality of patient care and identify problems and needs in all areas of the facility; implement appropriate follow‑up action.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and support to nursing staff by performing patient assessment, inserting IV catheter, NG tube insertion and other patient related treatments and assistance when necessary.
  • Provide assistance to staff in the use of monitoring equipment, IV pumps and other equipment used in patient treatment.
  • Act as a resource person if the unit/division is unable to solve a staffing dilemma; assist staff in utilizing staff to improve productivity and reduce agency usage.
  • Assign bed placement for emergency admissions, direct admissions and transfers, considering patient comfort and need, unit staffing and workload; obtain patient status from attending physician on direct admits.
  • Initiate appropriate counseling and disciplinary action of employees in the Nurse Manager’s absence in accordance with Human Resources and the Department of Nursing policies; this includes following policy regarding substance abuse.
  • Coordinate and perform patient transport from one area to another to expedite patient movement when needed; utilize resources to maintain patient flow and avoid diversion.
  • Respond immediately to all codes, Code Atlas and Code Red to assess needs and take appropriate actions according to policy; initiate snow and disaster plans when necessary.
  • Review and sign EMTALA forms to assure transfers are documented correctly.
  • Act as a resource for Care Management; assist with resolving issues of nursing home placement, transportation, adoption and DME on evenings, nights and weekends; assist staff with accurately reflecting discharge disposition in computer.
  • Communicate with and assist supervisors in Housekeeping with patient flow and housekeeping issues; prioritize bed cleaning in a coordinated effort with the EVS supervisor.
  • Assist as needed to coordinate ancillary services to provide procedures for patients, i.e., Cath Lab, OR, CT, etc.
  • Procure equipment, supplies and patient nourishment in the absence of ancillary personnel; utilize Agility tracking for equipment needs; transport remains to morgue and replace the code cart.
  • Resolve complaints as expediently as possible, communicating incident and resolution to appropriate management and/or notifying the administrator on‑call; act as Patient Advocate on off shifts.
  • Utilize Risk Management as a resource in resolving patient care issues; review protocols for Blood, TB and Flu exposure.
  • Function in place of Employee Wellness and Infection Control RN on off shifts.
  • Utilize a problem‑solving approach when dealing with conflict resolution between staff members, medical staff, visitors or other hospital employees.
  • Serve as an administrative resource for staff, physicians, patients and families in accordance with hospital policies and procedures; provide support to families in conjunction with Pastoral Care and Patient Advocates.
  • Notify appropriate person of unusual hospital occurrence; e.g., patient’s concerns, personnel conflict and any other emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and needs of the patients served on the assigned unit; demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the departmental policies and procedures.
