Job summary

Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC is seeking a Switchboard Operator to manage high-volume calls, emergency alerts, and communication requests with professionalism and HIPAA compliance. You will support hospital operations by routing calls, delivering emergency notices, and coordinating timely communication among clinical staff, responders, and security.

The role requires handling paging, overhead announcements, and log maintenance, with a strong emphasis on accuracy and teamwork in a 24/7

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Strong communication skills with patients, visitors, staff, and responders while maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
• Ability to remain calm and prioritize in high-pressure, fast-paced, emergency situations.
• Proficiency in operating multiple communication systems (switchboard, phones, paging, radios).
• Detail-oriented with solid log and records management.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize and respond to multiple incoming calls, emergencies, and urgent requests while maintaining professionalism.
• Handle all hospital calls, including extensions and patient room lines, with clear, courteous assistance.
• Perform in-house paging, code alerts, overhead announcements, and dial-a-page functions.
• Coordinate with staff, responders, and security to ensure timely communication per protocols.
• Maintain switchboard records, patient room assignments, admissions and discharges as needed.
• Operate multiple communication systems and maintain detailed call logs and records.
