Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Patient Access Specialist in Elizabeth, NJ to support Emergency Dept Access Service. This role handles patient registrations, insurance verification, and financial counseling with a focus on accuracy and courteous service.

The position requires 2–3 years in hospital registration, pre-certifications, and billing/collections knowledge, plus strong communication and computer skills. Night coverage may be required in some shifts.

Qualifications

• 2-3 years experience in a hospital patient registration setting
• Leadership skills or experience
• 2-3 years experience handling patients scheduling, obtaining pre-certifications, authorizations and referrals
• 2-3 years in a patient services environment (billing/collections)
• 2-3 years completing medical assistance applications (family care, PE’s, PAIC’s or charity care)
• Interpersonal skills with diverse constituencies
• Ability to work with the public and maintain poise; medical knowledge helpful
• Good typing and computer skills
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Ability to organize and manage time effectively

Responsibilities

• Provides professional, efficient customer service to patients and co-workers
• Verifies patient information and insurance details; reviews eligibility for financial assistance
• Verifies benefits and obtains necessary pre-certifications or referrals
• Notifies patients of prerequisites and insurance requirements
• Explains rates, discounts, and hospital policies to patients/families
• Ensures signatures and eligibility forms are obtained
• Checks ADT system for balances and outstanding accounts
• Collects patient payments and reconciles cash handling
• Documents notes on patient records for follow-up
• Registers patients and creates encounter numbers for admissions
• Maintains and updates advance directive information
• Prepares patient charts and folders for procedures and admissions
• Follows downtime procedures when systems are unavailable
• Answer phones promptly and assist callers
