Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago is seeking an Assistant Structural Engineer to support project teams across aviation, government, power, healthcare, and industrial facilities. You will assist in design, CAD updates, and field measurements under a licensed PE, adapting plans to budget and client needs.

The role emphasizes collaboration, attention to detail, and evolving competencies; EIT preferred, ABET accreditation valued, and strong communication and analytical skills required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or related field (ABET accreditation strongly preferred).
• Internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of standard structural engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment with strong critical thinking.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Basic skills include structural analysis programs (RISA), AutoCAD and BIM (Revit, Tekla).
• Strong attention to detail, teamwork, collaboration, organization and problem-solving.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineering in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the structural design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assist with modifying and reviewing production drawings for various facilities.
• Assist in designing structural components as directed by project managers.
• Apply basic knowledge of structural engineering concepts, codes and procedures.
• Assist with researching and compiling project data.
• Assist in updating drawings in CAD software.
• Perform field inspections, measurements or calculations for clients.
• Carry out other duties as assigned.
• Comply with policies and standards.
