Job summary

SMA America is seeking a Field Service Engineer, Medium Voltage for the Midwest region, based in/around Indianapolis, IN. The role is field-based with extensive travel and a company truck provided for site visits.

The technician will test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair SMA Medium Voltage systems, collaborating with SMA AG engineers and supporting warranty work, training, and client communication.

Qualifications

• At least one year hands-on experience in an electrical, electronic, utility, or field service role.
• Exposure to medium voltage equipment such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, terminations, or substation work.
• An associate degree in electrical or electronic technology, a completed trade or apprenticeship program, military technical training, or equivalent qualified experience.
• Comfort with electronic test equipment, at minimum a digital voltmeter and common hand tools, reading prints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
• Ability to analyze and solve problems effectively.
• Willingness to travel as required for regional work (often 80%).
• Valid driver's license and a driving record meeting insurance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Participates in daily job site safety briefings and performs testing, inspection, maintenance, and repair of SMA Medium Voltage systems in the field.
• Conducts DGA sampling and applies results to determine action.
• Maintains documentation and serves as field point of contact for customers (Level II/III).
• Collaborates with MV engineering and suppliers for root cause analyses and RCA status updates.
• Trains, mentors Level I and II technicians and supports field training.
• Develops processes and ensures inventory and tool/vehicle maintenance.
