Job summary

Orion Marine Construction is seeking an experienced Boat Captain to support field construction on marine and heavy civil projects. You will operate and navigate company vessels, transport crews and equipment, and coordinate with project teams in waterfront environments.

Responsibilities include safe vessel handling, routine inspections, and collaboration with Superintendents and crane operators to keep projects moving safely and efficiently. Master licenses are required.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience as Boat Captain and an active Master Boat Captain license.
  • Master Boat Captain license and Master of Towing endorsement for tugboat operations.
  • Knowledge of inland waterways Rules of the Road and radio communications.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tugboats, barges and related equipment with safety.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the tugboat and barge safely in transit to marine project sites.
  • Maneuver, position, turn and slow vessels as required by field operations.
  • Communicate with flagman on barge deck using hand signals and radio.
  • Secure tugboat to barges with ropes and wires; follow the Rules of the Road.
  • Perform daily safety inspections and basic engine, generator and cooling system checks.
  • Coordinate with project teams to support marine construction activities.
