Roxbury Community College is seeking a Maker Space Program Lead to support daily Maker Space operations on campus. The student leader will combine hands-on technical support with peer leadership, workflow coordination, and project ownership under supervision.

The role requires current RCC enrollment for 2026-2027, an active Federal Work-Study award, and adherence to SAP and payroll requirements. 10–12 hours weekly, up to 18.5 hours, starting Sept 21, 2026.

Position Summary

The Maker Space Program Lead is an advanced student leadership position supporting the daily operation of the RCC Maker Space. Designed as an advancement opportunity for a returning or otherwise qualified student, the Lead combines hands‑on technical support with peer leadership, workflow coordination, workshop support, and greater ownership of assigned Maker Space projects. The student works under the supervision of Hillel Sims and helps model safe, professional, and effective use of Maker Space resources.

  • Greet users and assist with routine Maker Space check‑in and sign‑out procedures.
  • Organize tools, supplies, instructional materials, and work areas according to staff directions.
  • Assist with basic setup and breakdown for demonstrations, workshops, and scheduled activities.
  • Maintain routine inventory, usage, and supply records using approved forms or spreadsheets.
  • Provide basic orientation to posted room procedures and refer technical, safety, or equipment-operation questions to authorized staff.
  • Support cleaning and orderly storage of materials; do not independently authorize equipment use or provide unsupervised technical instruction.
  • Currently enrolled at Roxbury Community College for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Have an active Federal Work-Study award and sufficient remaining FWS eligibility before beginning work.
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with institutional and financial-aid requirements.
  • Complete all required student-employment and payroll documentation before beginning work.
  • Work only the approved FWS schedule and duties assigned by the designated RCC supervisor.
Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Previous Maker Space, student employment, internship, project-based, or comparable applied experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency or strong working familiarity with relevant Maker Space tools, equipment, or technical processes.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, organization, and ability to work with greater independence.
  • Strong communication, customer-service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive peer guidance and support team workflows.
  • Commitment to following and modeling safety, equipment-use, and operating procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in the RCC Maker Space or a comparable makerspace, lab, studio, or technical environment.
  • Experience with 3D printing, CAD, slicing software, prototyping, virtual reality, or related technologies.
  • Experience supporting workshops, demonstrations, peer learning, events, or technical projects.

Federal Work-Study Compliance Notes

  • This FWS assignment is part-time, on-campus student employment and is contingent upon continued Federal Work-Study eligibility and available award funding.
  • FWS students may perform only the duties identified for the FWS assignment and approved by the supervisor; Learn & Earn responsibilities are not interchangeable with FWS duties.
  • Students and supervisors are responsible for monitoring scheduled hours so the student does not exceed the approved FWS award or institutional work-hour limits.
  • Timesheets must accurately reflect hours actually worked and be approved by the designated supervisor through the College's approved timekeeping process.

Supervision & Performance

The Maker Space Program Lead reports to Hillel Sims or another designated department supervisor. The Lead may provide peer guidance, help coordinate student-team tasks, support onboarding and training, and serve as a point of contact during assigned activities, but does not hold formal supervisory authority over RCC employees. The student must follow Maker Space safety procedures, RCC Student Employment policies, and department expectations. Performance concerns will be addressed through RCC's progressive intervention process.

Advancement

This Level III role recognizes demonstrated growth in technical proficiency, independent problem-solving, project ownership, workshop support, and peer leadership. The position may prepare the student for advanced STEM, technical, lab, fabrication, design, or project-based opportunities.
