DEQ has an open opportunity for a Maintenance/Construction Technician III.

Description of Work:

This position is responsible for performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain laboratory and facility equipment and for performing general maintenance and machinery repairs for four buildings encompassing 51,000 square feet, HVAC and other related facilities located at the Department of Environmental Quality Water Science Laboratory facilities located at the Reedy Creek Road Complex along with other DEQ occupied sites across the state of North Carolina. The position will participate in an on-call rotation. This position performs physical tasks for an extended period and requires lifting up to 100 pounds.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Complete monthly preventative maintenance tasks on commercial electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, carpentry, heating and HVAC systems.
  • Ordering and maintaining a prescribed load listing of supplies and for maintaining stock control procedures for tools, parts and supplies needed to maintain electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating, generator and HVAC systems.
  • Identify, isolate, and rectify faults so that the failed equipment and machinery can be restored to an operational condition within the tolerances or limits established for in-service operations.
  • Provide limited contract oversight for housekeeping, grounds, building maintenance.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to include some weekend work.

The Division of Facilities, Health, and Safety Services:

This Section is responsible for building facility maintenance and repairs which includes responsibility for two major buildings (Archdale and Green Square), four buildings located along Reedy Creek Road Complex, Division of Coastal Management in Morehead City with three district offices, Division of Marine Fisheries in Morehead City, fixed assets, vehicles, over 200 easement stewardship sites, and all leases related to property inclusive of seven regional offices in Asheville, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Mooresville, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, and Washington.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:


  • Documented work experience performing preventative maintenance on buildings and/or equipment.
  • Documented work experience maintaining inventory and/or ordering supplies.
  • Documented work experience in reading and/or interpreting building codes and/or blueprints.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification:
May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
