Job summary

The Journalism Library at University of Missouri-Columbia seeks a Library Information Specialist to provide frontline library services to a diverse user base. You will handle circulation, course reserves, and basic reference inquiries, while supporting interlibrary loan and equipment tasks.

You will work Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm, with opportunities to assist in special projects and to help keep service desks open during normal hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 2 years of experience or transferable skills.
  • Public service and customer-service oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Frontline Desk Duties: assist library users by phone, email or in person with reference questions and account inquiries.
  • Check out and check in books, journals, equipment, and other circulating materials.
  • Open/Close Desk areas as needed to ensure service coverage.
  • Process incoming and returning materials from MU campus libraries and MOBIUS libraries.
  • Interlibrary loan: locate, label, and send materials on request.
  • Provide support for library print and electronic reserve services and Hold Shelf tasks.
  • Troubleshoot equipment/tech issues and refer complex problems to LTS.
  • Keep work areas tidy and properly labeled with photos and signage.

Act as backup when necessary to ensure the Service Desks remain open during normal hours.

The Journalism Library provides primary library support for the faculty, staff and students in the School of Journalism.

Key Job Duties

Frontline Desk Duties - Assists library users via phone, email or in-person with basic reference questions concerning digital and physical materials, policy inquiries, procedural questions, and inquiries about their library account. Knows how and when to refer questions as appropriate. - Checks out / checks in books, journals, equipment, and other circulating library materials to library users. - Opens/Closes the Desk areas as needed.

Backend Circulation and Multimedia Tasks - Processes incoming and returning materials from MU (University of Missouri-Columbia) campus libraries, UM Libraries, and other MOBIUS libraries. - Interlibrary loan: locate, scan, label, and send interlibrary loan materials upon request - Provides support for library print and electronic reserve services. - Provides assistance as needed with Hold Shelf tasks, equipment tasks - Help update and maintain software when requested by LTS (Library Technical Services). - Work with patrons to troubleshoot equipment/technology/software problems. Refer technical problems to LTS. - Identify library’s changing equipment needs and make suggestions to librarian/LTS for new purchases based on patron inquiries. - Keep equipment drawers, cabinets, cubbies tidy, organized with proper photos and signage of contents.

Other Duties - Work on special projects as assigned by Library Specialist Sr., Head, Journalism Library, or Journalism Librarian. - Other duties and projects as assigned.

Shift

Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications
  • Have public service experience.
  • Moderate knowledge of various software, hardware and multimedia equipment.
  • Have excellent customer service skills.
  • Be highly self-motivated, dependable, responsible, and possess great teamwork, excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Should be able to work independently and demonstrate excellent decision-making skills.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $16-$16.70 hourly

Grade: GGS-6
