Job summary

The Legislative Research Council in Pierre, SD seeks a Legislative Editor for a permanent, full-time role. The editor will proof legislative documents during session, print and deliver session paperwork, and assist in proofing the yearly Session Laws and Codified Laws.

The ideal candidate will have strong writing and proofreading skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work under tight deadlines during the legislative session.

Responsibilities

The Legislative Research Council, which is the nonpartisan research and support staff to the South Dakota State Legislature, is accepting applications for a permanent, full-timeLegislative Editor. An applicant must have an interest in the legislative process and be results-oriented, honest, discrete, trustworthy, and articulate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Proof legislative documents during session;
2. Printing and delivering all necessary session paperwork;
3. Assist in proofing the yearly Session Laws and Codified Laws;
4. Serve as committee secretary for the Rules Review and Code Commission Committees;
5. Compile and publish the South Dakota Register;
6. Proof and update Administrative Rules;
7. Compile and send LRC style and form rules packets to agencies;
8. Edit and format all office publications; and
9. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or political science is preferred;
2. Strong writing and proofing skills;
3. Strong computer skills, and the ability to learn specialized systems;
4. The ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a manner that clearly and efficiently conveys information to legislators and the public;
5. The ability to remain objective and nonpartisan in relations to all legislative matters, maintain confidentiality, and handle politically sensitive work; and
6. Ability to work under tight deadlines and extended hours during the legislative session.

Salary Range:

$54,000 to $98,200. Actual starting salary will depend on qualifications and experience.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act and is employed at will.
